What is Cancer Coaching?

A cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming. Appointments are often short, information is
complex, and questions keep coning long after you’ve left the clinic.

That’s where cancer coaching comes in.

What is cancer coaching?

Cancer coaching is a personalized, one-on-one service designed to help patients and their
families better understand a cancer diagnosis, navigate a healthcare system, and feel more
confident in their decisions.

It is not medical care—it’s guidance, education, and support.

At myFriendMD®, cancer coaching focuses on helping you make sense of the information you’re
receiving and empowering you to take an active role in your care.

Why do patents and families seek cancer coaching?

Most oncology visits are limited to 15-20 minutes. During that time, your medical team is
focused on diagnosis and treatment planning—but there often isn’t enough time to cover
everything. And even if you or your loved one “should” do something, there may be fears and
reservations that need to be unpacked. Cancer coaching can help explore why you are afraid to
commit to a particular treatment or recommendation for you or a loved one.

Patients and caregivers are left with:

  • Questions they forgot to ask
  • Information they didn’t fully understand
  • Decisions they don’t feel prepared to make
  • Fear to commit to a treatment plan that may involve toxicity

Cancer coaching fills that gap—the space between appointments.

What does a cancer coach do?

A cancer coach helps you:

Understand your diagnosis
We break down complex medical information into clear, understandable language:

  • What do ER, PR, and HER2 mean for breast cancer?
  • What stage is my cancer and why?
  • What does this pathology report actually say?
  • Explain common treatments that may be recommended
  • Explore your fears and concerns about the diagnosis and treatment plan

Prepare for appointments
You’ll walk into visits more confident and organized:

  • Build a focused list of questions to optimize doctor visits and make sure important
    things are addressed and remembered
  • Know what decisions are coming next
  • Understand your options before you meet with your doc

Navigate treatment options
We help you understand the “why” behind recommendations:

  • What are the benefits and risks of each option?
  • Are there alternatives?
  • How do these choices align with your goals?

Support caregivers and families
Caregivers often carry a heavy, unexpected burden. Coaching helps them:

  • Organize medical information
  • Communicate effectively with the care team
  • Feel more confident supporting the loved one

Make sense of the “in-between”
Questions don’t only come up during appointments—they come up at night, between visits,
and when new information arises.

Cancer coaching provides a space to address:

  • “What should I ask next?”
  • “Does this symptom matter?”
  • “Am I on the right path?”

What cancer coaching is not

Cancer coaching is not a replacement for your oncology team.

At myFriendMD®:

  • We do not diagnose cancer
  • We do not prescribe medications
  • We do not order tests or perform procedures

Instead, we complement your medical care by helping you better understand and navigate it.

Your oncologist remains the center of your treatment. Cancer coaching helps you get more out
of that care.

The value of time

One of the most important differences is time.

Cancer coaching sessions are typically 60 minutes, allowing space to:

  • Ask all of your questions (not just the first two)
  • Fully understand your situation
  • Talk through decisions without feeling rushed

This is where clarity—and confidence—begins.

Who is cancer coaching for?

Cancer coaching can benefit:

  • Those newly diagnosed
  • Those in active treatment
  • Survivors navigating life after cancer
  • Caregivers supporting a loved one
  • Anyone seeking a second look at their options

The goal: clarity, confidence, and empowerment

Cancer is complex—but understanding it shouldn’t feel impossible.

Cancer coaching helps you:

  • Feel more informed
  • Ask better questions
  • Make decisions aligned with your values
  • Navigate your care with confidence

At myFriendMD®, we believe that people deserve more than rushed visits and unanswered
questions.

They deserve time, clarity, and support—every step of the way.
